Calling Fred Langford’s golf course just another par-3 layout is sort of like calling Wrigley Field just another ballpark.
Frederick (Fred) Langford, 1927–2022, grew up locally here in Cape May County, but his path and pursuit of design led him around the world. Following architecture school at the University of Pennsylvania, he worked for the internationally acclaimed architect Louis Kahn designing concrete formwork, first for the Salk Institute in San Diego, California and later at the National Parliament building in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
On a junket back to the States, he met up with his childhood friend and first business partner, Wilbert C. Morey, who was embarking on a new mini waterpark concept at Moreys Piers in Wildwood, New Jersey. Fred designed the stair tower leading to the top of the waterslides and became so fascinated with this new industry that he immediately started thinking about how to do it better. He soon converted his formal training in concrete formwork design into designing formwork for a new version of fiberglass waterslides. His new company was named Surf Coaster and his slides were built on six continents. His impact in the amusement industry led to this induction in to the IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) Hall of Fame, an honor he co-shared with his childhood friend, Wilbert C. Morey, who is also in the Hall of Fame.
Then came golf. Why golf you ask? Well look around at the concrete retaining walls of the lakes and you will see Fred’s personal fingerprint as he both designed and built the forms personally. Originally called Laguna Oaks, this course was Fred’s final passion project. Soon after his passing in 2022, the Morey Family purchased the course and plans to continue the passion that Fred started.
